On October 20, 1981, his left hand was caught and crushed in a conveyor belt he was repairing. He was treated by Drs. Alfred Monteilh and Louis W. Field. Notwithstanding that treatment, his hand was amputated by a Seattle surgeon on October 26, 1981.
